Gray, white, blonde, and red hair can be removed permanently with electrolysis, because it treats the follicle rather than the hair color. Laser cannot. Sessions in our Irvine studio start at $50, and a small facial area typically takes 8 to 15 sessions.

Why can't laser remove light-colored hair?

Laser hair removal works by sending light into the skin. The pigment in a dark hair absorbs that light and turns it into heat, and the heat damages the follicle. That is the whole mechanism. When the hair has no pigment, there is nothing to absorb the light. Gray and white hairs have lost their pigment. Blonde hair has very little. Red hair holds a pigment that most lasers absorb poorly.

That is why many people try three or four laser sessions, find that the dark hairs fade, and then discover a stubborn layer of pale hair is still there. Some clinics will not treat light hair at all. For a full side-by-side, see electrolysis vs laser.

How does electrolysis handle hair of any color?

Electrolysis does not look at color. A fine probe is placed into the follicle along the hair shaft, and heat, a chemical reaction, or both destroy the follicle. The hair can be black, silver, gold, or ginger, and the process is the same. The FDA allows electrolysis to be marketed as permanent hair removal, and no other method has that standing.

Aida Khazieva, a licensed cosmetologist and electrologist with 20+ years of experience, uses an Apilus device with thermolysis, galvanic, and blend. Pale, fine hairs are often best on thermolysis, while a coarse gray hair on the chin may call for blend. Details are on the electrolysis hub.

How many sessions do light hairs need?

Typical numbers for a small facial area are 8 to 15 sessions over 9 to 18 months. Light and fine hairs are not harder to treat. They simply take careful eyes. Expect:

If gray hairs appeared recently, hormones may still be active, and new ones can show up. That is normal, and they are treated as they come in. Results vary.

How do you prepare for a visit?

Do not bleach, wax, or pluck beforehand. Bleaching makes pale hair harder to see, and waxing removes the hair the probe needs. Shave one or two days before so the hair is short and visible. Treatment is done under magnification and strong light, so even a pale hair that disappears in a bathroom mirror is easy to catch.

Every probe is sterile and single-use. Redness fades within hours, and daily sunscreen protects treated skin. Aida has treated over 10,000 clients, and you can read her background on the about Aida page.

Questions

Can gray hair be removed permanently?

Yes. Electrolysis works on gray and white hair because it treats the follicle, not the pigment. It is the only method the FDA allows to be marketed as permanent.

Why doesn't laser work on gray or blonde hair?

Laser looks for dark pigment to absorb light. Gray, white, and blonde hairs have little or none, so the light has nothing to heat and the follicle is left alone.

Does electrolysis work on red hair?

Yes. Red hair has a different pigment that lasers often miss. Electrolysis ignores color, so red hair is treated like any other.

How much does it cost?

Sessions start at $50 for the upper lip and $65 for the chin, up to $150 for legs. The price depends on the area and session length, not on the hair color.

Can I treat just a few gray hairs?

Yes. A short upper lip or chin session is a common choice for a handful of stray hairs. A first visit is $25 off.

Will I need more sessions because the hair is light?

Not necessarily. Fine, light hairs often respond well. The count depends on hair density and hormones, typically 8 to 15 sessions for a small facial area.

Can you see light hairs well enough?

Yes. We treat under magnification and good lighting, which makes pale hairs much easier to see than they are in a mirror at home.

I have already had laser. Can you finish the job?

Yes. Many clients come after laser to remove the hairs it left behind. See the finishing section on the electrolysis vs laser page.
