Electrolysis is permanent hair removal for every skin and hair color. A licensed electrologist treats each follicle with a fine sterile probe. Small facial areas typically take 8 to 15 sessions. Sessions in our Irvine studio cost $50 to $150, and the first consultation is free.

What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis destroys the hair follicle itself. A probe thinner than a hair slides into the follicle along the hair shaft, a small amount of energy is delivered, and the hair lifts out with tweezers. One follicle at a time, one hair at a time. It sounds slow, and it is, but it is also the reason the result lasts.

The FDA allows electrolysis to be marketed as permanent hair removal, and no other method has that status. Lasers, waxing, threading, and creams are all described as "reduction" or "removal" because the hair returns. If you want the long version of that comparison, read electrolysis vs laser.

Our studio sits in Irvine and serves clients across Orange County, from Newport Beach and Costa Mesa to Tustin, Lake Forest, and Anaheim. Aida Khazieva, a licensed cosmetologist and electrologist with more than 20 years of experience, has treated over 10,000 clients. She also wrote the book "I Am an Electrologist" and trains new electrologists, with 1,500+ students taught so far. You can read more on the about Aida page.

How do thermolysis, galvanic, and blend work?

All three methods use the same probe. What changes is how the follicle is destroyed. We work with an Apilus device, which lets the electrologist choose the method per area and per hair.

Thermolysis

High-frequency current heats the follicle for a fraction of a second. It is fast, which makes it the usual choice for larger areas and for fine, shallow hairs.

Galvanic

A tiny direct current creates a chemical reaction in the follicle that destroys it from the inside. It is slower but effective on curved, deep, or stubborn follicles.

Blend

Combines both. The heat speeds up the chemical action, so coarse, deep-rooted hairs are treated more reliably than with either method alone.

Your electrologist picks the method after looking at the hair, the skin, and the area. Many clients end up on a mix, for example thermolysis on a fine upper lip and blend on coarse chin hairs.

Why is electrolysis permanent when other methods are not?

Laser and light devices heat the pigment in the hair. They slow growth, but the follicle often survives and returns. Electrolysis does not depend on pigment at all. It targets the follicle wall and the cells that produce the hair. A follicle that has been fully treated cannot make a new hair.

Hair grows in cycles, and only a portion of your hairs are visible at any moment. That is why treatment takes months. Hairs that were resting under the skin show up later, and each gets its turn. After the last session, new growth is not expected from treated follicles, though hormonal changes can activate follicles that were never treated.

Does it work on all skin tones and hair colors?

Yes. Because electrolysis acts on the follicle, not on the color of the hair or skin, it works on dark skin, light skin, tanned skin, and everything between. It also works on gray, white, blonde, red, and very fine hair. These are the hairs laser cannot see. We cover them in detail on the gray and blonde hair removal page.

How many sessions and how long does treatment take?

Numbers depend on the area, hair density, and hormones. These are typical ranges, not promises.

Most people start with weekly or every-other-week visits, then space them out to every three or four weeks as the hair thins. The spacing gets longer because fewer hairs are left. A typical client sees a clear difference after the first two or three months.

What does a visit look like?

  1. You arrive and we look at the area under magnification. The hair should be about a grain of rice long, so shave one or two days before.
  2. The skin is cleansed. Your electrologist opens a sterile probe in front of you.
  3. Hairs are treated one by one. You feel a brief pinch or warmth per hair. Most people read, listen to music, or talk.
  4. A soothing product goes on. Redness usually fades within a few hours.
  5. You book the next visit before you leave.

The first visit also includes a short conversation about your goals, medications, and skin history, so treatment fits you.

How do you keep it sterile and safe?

Every probe is single-use. It is opened in front of you and thrown away after the session. Gloves are changed for each client, surfaces are disinfected between visits, and the device is used by a licensed professional. We follow the sanitation standards expected of electrologists. If you ever have a question about what is happening, ask. Clients are encouraged to watch the setup.

What should you do after a session?

Light redness and tiny bumps are normal and settle quickly. Full instructions are in the FAQ. Questions before you book? Use the contact page, or come in for the free 15-minute consultation.

Questions

Is electrolysis really permanent?

Yes. It is the only hair removal method the FDA allows to be marketed as permanent. Each follicle is treated individually, so a follicle that has been fully destroyed cannot grow a new hair. Results vary, and hormones can wake new follicles over time.

Does electrolysis hurt?

Most clients describe a quick warm pinch or a tingle. Sensitive areas like the upper lip and bikini line feel stronger. Your electrologist adjusts the intensity as you go, and you can ask for a pause at any point.

How many sessions will I need?

A small facial area typically takes 8 to 15 sessions over 9 to 18 months. Larger body areas and hormonal hair take longer. Your electrologist gives you a realistic estimate at the free consultation.

Can you treat dark skin, gray hair, or blonde hair?

Yes. Electrolysis works on the follicle, not on pigment, so skin tone and hair color do not limit it. It is the main option for gray, white, blonde, and red hair.

How much does electrolysis cost in Irvine?

Sessions range from $50 for an upper lip to $150 for a leg session. You pay for time, so you can book 15 to 60 minutes depending on the area. Packages save 10% on 5 visits and 15% on 10 visits.

Is it safe?

Yes. We use sterile, single-use probes opened in front of you, and fresh gloves for every visit. The method has been used for well over a century and is regulated for safe use.

Can I shave or wax before my visit?

Shave a day or two before so the hair is short but visible. Do not wax or pluck for at least two weeks, because the hair has to be present for the probe to follow it to the root.

Do you offer a consultation?

Yes. The 15-minute consultation is free. You see the device, talk through your goals, and can try a few hairs before you book anything.
